The first guns in Urbandale were pistols. The first gunsmith in town was James Weldon and he made pistols. He built a store on the corner of First and State Streets. In 1871, J.P. Morgan came to Urbandale and bought land at 4th and State Streets for a rifle factory. At that time, the town had about 20 people. The first rifles were made there. In 1876, the town voted to make its own law – it was the only town in Iowa to do so – and they got an American Rifle Company as their local supplier of firearms. They started manufacturing rifles there until 1928 when they moved to Omaha, Nebraska because of World War II production quotas
Urbandale, Iowa is a city in Webster County, Iowa, United States. The population was 9,735 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Area. The Urbandale post office was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 15, 2006. The town's first settler was John Caird. His son-in-law James Buchanan built a log cabin on what is now Payne Road in 1883. In 1905, the town name was changed to Urbandale after J.W. Urbanski founded an insurance company there. In 1912 the Union Pacific Railroad construction stopped due to lack of funding; however, the village continued to grow because of its location near Chicago and points eastward along the tracks. In 1914 voters passed a ordinance establishing a public library; this building still stands and houses the Urbandale Municipal Building today (along with many other historically significant buildings). After World War I ended and monies were available for new projects throughout Southeast Iowa, Urbandale began growing rapidly again as businesses opened up including Wahoo’s Clothing Store which operated from 1915 to 1917 and served as a model for later stores such as Sears & Roebuck & Co., KMart (later known as Walmart), Macy’s department store chain (now Macy’s), etc.; also beginning in 1916 construction began on what would become Morningside Heights High School which opened in 1918 adjacent to Wahoo’s storefront; today that institution serves both students and staff local residents through its main branch located inside the former high school building across from Interstate 35E exit 306A/ 307A – one of only two high schools in Webster County still open regular classes year round! finally another anchor tenant arrived when Hermann Bros., grocery clerks at Wahoo’s closed their doors early one morning during Prohibition – serving customers who came by car or bus until about 2 A.M.; later that same year establishment became home to The Bottle Shop Tavern which went out of business but has since been preserved as an historical landmark! all these examples reflect not just how fast or how much things had changed since those early days but also how much people have always triedto keep pace with changing times! In 1970 Urbandale annexed neighboring Crossett Township so that it could better serve its commercial development within walking distance of its larger neighbor thanks largely to advances made by then Mayor Bob Smithson regarding traffic engineering solutions following multiple fatal accidents involving vehicles traveling on Center Street between Crossett Township limits and Urbandale Junction whereupon both streets were redesignated “ urbane streets ” while urbane areas extended beyond those boundaries into Crossett Township making possible convenient access for commuters journeying into town from rural areas or even outlying villages Some years later after extensive fundraising efforts spearheaded by then City Manager Don Doherty progress had been made towards groundbreaking ceremonies took place results included current City Council member Rick Hester being elected Mayor six months prior thereto resultant growth spurts included annexation of adjoining Cedar Rapids Township followed by designation of Streetscape District No 1 comprising nearly all blocks within Cedar Rapids borders making possible designations like prestigious corridors/ arteries like Elm street being redirected eastward via First Avenue thence northeasterly via Vine Street Sewerage treatment plant facilities were also added becoming contiguous neighborhoods sharing amenities enjoyed elsewhere including some excellent retail spaces including several large supermarkets along First Avenue

The racial makeup of the town was 96% White and 2% African American. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 1% of the population.

The town grew rapidly, becoming a center for education and culture, with many notable pioneers including Samuel Morse and Amos Kendall. In 1892, Urbandale became the capital of Iowa; it remains the seat of government today.
