A post office called "Umbrella" was established in 1852, but it was discontinued after a few years because no one wanted to deliver mail from an umbrella. In 1872, the town was named for George Fenton Lyon II, who had donated $5,000 towards construction of a irrigation ditch between UI and Amesbury Township. The town became incorporated on December 15, 1912. In 1930, General Motors announced plans to build a new plant in Urbandale which would employ 1,200 workers; however due to World War II the plant never transpired and instead it produced engines for American involvement in the war (ammunition production). After World War II there were many small businesses that emerged throughout Urbandsale thanks to GI spending that created jobs outside of traditional manufacturing companies such as john Deere & Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., and other large retailers/wholesalers that opened up around Iowa during this time period. In 1960s Urbandsale experienced some growth when several churches relocated here including First Baptist Church (later reorganized into Southern Baptist Convention), St John's Episcopal Church (later reorganized into Unitarian Universalist Congregational Church), Adventist Missionary Baptist Church (later reorganized into Assemblies of God), Methodist Episcopal Church (later reorganized into LutheranChurchUSA), and Presbyterianism's Second Presbyterian Churches merger congregation organized as Evangelical Lutheran Synod with Allianturtee Presbyterian Churches becoming Evangelical Lutheran Synod-Allianturtee Presbyterian Churches circa 1970s followed by another church consolidation event with Oneida Methodist Episcopal Church moving from Waterloo Village to meet Highway 5 just east of town split off from Allianturtee Parish circa 1980s bringing total number of congregations affiliated with synodnear 100%. Today there are over 100 congregations affiliated with The United Methodist Association-Urbana-Champaign circuit which meets annually at Emmanuel Lutheran Services Chapel located adjacent to IH 35W exit 20A about two hours north of Des Moines
