They laid out a town on the site of what is now Urbandale and named it for their home state of Illinois, which they had just visited. In 1841, James Fenton bought land in Urbandale from the Smiths and began to build a house there. He named his new town after John Fenton's father-in-law, David Rogers. The community soon grew too small for Fenton to keep up with development so he sold his land to Abraham Jenson in 1863 and moved his family to Urbandale. In 1869, Charles DeBolt opened a general store on Third Street in Urbandale and became one of its first successful merchants. He also built a woolen mill on Fourth Street that continued operation until it burned down in 1936; DeBolt was blamed for not properly planning the fire prevention measures that would have been necessary had the mill been rebuilt as an modern structure. In 1906, two young men from nearby Clearfield decided to start a farm near what is now Urbandsaland name their farm after themselves: Clarence Davenport Farmstead (1906) and Alvin Clements Farmstead (1907). These farms remain today as continuing vestiges of earlyUrabandale life

In 1916, Urbandale was acquired by the city of Des Moines and formally renamed it after its founder, Uriah Heep.
