By 1870, Urbandale had become an important cotton milling center, with several factories producing clothing, shoes, wagon parts and more. The 20th century saw a number of changes at Urbandale: in 1916 it became one of the first communities in Iowa to obtainelectricity; later that year it also became home to the Iowa State Prison (now called Perry Correctional Institution). During World War II, Urbandale played a pivotal role as a military training ground; many residents served in both combatant and Axis forces stationed there. In recent decades, however, Urbandale has experienced growth as a hub for arts and culture; its largest industry now is agriculture-based production.
Urbandale was founded in 1847 by George Fenton and his wife, Nancy. The town was named after a nearby creek, Urbandale Creek. In the early days of Urbandale, it was a small farming community with about 25 residents. By 1861, the population had grown to 100 and by 1865 it had reached 200. The town's first school was built in 1848. By 1870, the population had increased to 300 and the school became too large for its space. A new school building was erected in 1875 and remained in use until 1907 when it burned down. In 1911, Urbandale became a city with a population of 500 citizens. It experienced some growth during World War I when many soldiers came to live in the town; however, the war ended before any real progress could be made. Unfortunately, during World War II, Urbandale saw an increase in crime because of wartime shortages of housing and jobs. In recent years, there has been an increase in development within town limits as businesses have moved into new locations or expand their operations inside current buildings. One such example is The urabandale Shopping Center which opened up on Main Street just east of downtown Urbandale last year (2007). This mall features over 50 stores including four JCPenney locations as well as several other major retailers along with restaurants and nightlife options making it one of the most popular shopping destinations within town limits today!
