In 1916, they started producing 9mm rounds and in 1928, 7.62x39mm rounds were produced. The current production line for Urbandale's ammunition begins with powder, primers and bullets at ancillary businesses before being sent to the factory where it is cut into different calibers and batches according to customer requests. Ammunition is hand-loaded in order to ensure consistent quality control throughout its entire supply chain. In 1886, ammonium nitrate (a fertilizer) was discovered on land near Urbandale.
