Urbandale is a city in Douglas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 4,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines metropolitan area. Urbandale was founded in 1879 as a small station on the northwest corner of what is now Douglas and Nodaway Streets. When the first railroad arrived in Iowa, it passed through Urbandale on its way to Cedar Rapids. The railroad's tracks were moved east when Cedar Rapids became an incorporated city in 1907. The original town was destroyed by a tornado on November 2, 1881, and again by a tornado on November 25, 1883. A new town was built near present-day Urbandale in 1885 by combining parts of two other towns that had been destroyed by tornadoes: Algona and Newton. The name for the new community was Griggsville after Elijah Griggs (founder of Griggs County) and his family donated land for it. In 1903, Urbandale had a population of 515 people; it grew to 1,000 people by 1907 when the first telephone line arrived in Iowa. In 1914, Griggsville became an incorporated city with its own government; it merged with nearby Newton about 15 years later to form Urbana Township. The merger led to increased traffic between Newton and Griggsville so much so that demand for more streets made their separation necessary; this eventually caused one street in each township to be named after different leaders from each community: Main Street (Griggsville), Jefferson Boulevard (Newton), Lincoln Boulevard (Urbana Township), and Wright Parkway (Urbana Township). During World War II, Urbana Township served as headquarters for Transportation Command until May 1942 when General George Custer's last troops left India en route home following Operation Everest; command then passed to Headquarters European Headquarters before being transferred back to America on July 15th itself via Omaha Beach just before D-Day; this finally ended up giving Dearborn Heights jurisdiction over all transportation commands within America which relieved Springfield Armory Command of responsibility for that sector of Europe during those same months leading up too Allied Invasion Normandy June 6th 1944 - thereby ending military control over these areas once again which eventual reverted back fully back into American hands following Liberation May 8th 1945 good news indeed!
