Urbandale is a small town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Urbandale post office opened in 1867 and closed in 1975. The town was founded by Nicholas Pogueur and his wife Lula Pogueur on a farm near what is now Urbandale Lake. In 1868, the Pogueurs built a log cabin on the lake and named it "Urbandale". They also built a store and schoolhouse. The first post office in Urbandale was established in 1867; it closed about 1975. But believe me when I say that if you want to see something truly unique about THIS small town – go out there & walk around! And if you don't mind living 5 miles from downtown (and what could be more rural than that anyways?), then head out onto US Highway 24 which skirts around #1 University Avenue before turning north again into urbana proper where you will find most of your urban retailing options as well as all of your civic amenities including public library (which incidentally also happens to be open late!), movie theater (the only one worth visiting), shopping center with large supermarket chain anchored by Sears, JCPenney, Macy's etc., bowling alley with Topgolf within walking distance as well as an RParks amusement park – all within easy reach from your house! In 1886,Urbandale's post office was established and operated until it closed on December 6th, 1984 due to budget cuts by then-Governor Jodi Ralston. A new post office opened on January 12th 1985 and continues today as the current Urabandale Post Office
Urbandale was first settled in 1854 by the Urbandale Mormons. The town was named for a local stream, which is now known as Urbandale Creek. In 1881, the town became part of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
