Spencer, Iowa is a town in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,381 at the 2010 census. Spencer is located on the south side of the Missouri River. It has arictly agricultural economy with a large dairy and livestock operation. The town was platted in 1871 by George Waco and named after Spencer Parish in Louisiana. Spencer grew rapidly from its original settlement of just under 100 people in 1871 to over 1,000 by 1893 thanks to new transportation and irrigation systems brought about by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 which split the United States into two separate entities - Nebraska Territory including Omaha and Kansas City on the one hand, while Orleans on the other. By 1902, Spencer had annexed what were then parts of Waterloo County (now part of Lincoln) and became an incorporated town.
