This addition allowed him to carry even more optically-sensitive products such as eyeglasses and sunglasses frames! Spencer, Iowa is a town in Douglas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. Spencer is located on the Missouri River. It was founded in 1851 as part of the Sioux City area and incorporated as a city in 1907. Spencer has been called the "Gateway to the Midwest." The first white settlers arrived in Spencer in 1851 by way of Minnesota and Dakota Territory. They were farmers who built log cabins and corn cribs along the river. In 1907, Spencer became an official city with its own government and economy within the boundaries of Douglas County. The early residents of Spencer are buried at Prairie View Cemetery near downtown Spencer. The Town site was chosen for its location on a bend in the Missouri River which made it easy to get water for irrigation purposes and also served as a convenient trade center for other settlements upstream or downstream on the river (eastern Iowa). The name "Spencer" derived from two Shawnee words meaning "place where water flows easily." In 1851, when General James Shields established Fort Atkinson (now Council Bluffs), he ordered his men to cross overland from Indian Territory into Douglas County to build an outpost there for protection against hostile Native Americans living among them. When Shields discovered that these Indians had fled across Illinois' great Sioux River into Canada after being driven out of their territory by Ulysses S Grant's Expedition, he decided that this was just what he needed to protect himself from possible attack by those same Indians - he named his new post Fort Atkinson after himself! Census data shows that during 1860-1910 Spencer had a population of 562 people (of whom only 248 lived in town). However, during those ten years more than 1,000 people moved into town - most notably during World War I when many local farmers joined forces with US military units stationed hereabouts.
The town of Spencer was founded in 1855 by John A. Spencer and his wife, Sarah. The town grew quickly and soon became a popular tourist destination for people from all over the Midwest. In 1916, Spencer was named the capital of Iowa.
