On July 1, 1871, Spencer was the site of the first public gun show in Iowa. The show was organized by William J. Mahoney and promoted by Mahoney’s friend, Senator John A. Logan of Des Moines. At the show, gun enthusiasts from all overIowa came to purchase firearms.
Spencer is a town in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Spencer is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines–Indianapolis metropolitan area. It lies in the eastern edge of the Driftless Area and is bordered by north to south by Cedar Rapids and east to west by Dubuque. The community takes its name from General George Spencer who fought in 1812 against Chief Wabasha on what is now north-central Iowa. The first settler in Spencer was John Aiken who arrived in 1836. In 1840, Andrew White settled there and had two children, Anna and Andrew Jr.. In 1851, Amos Fenton came and built a log cabin near present day Griggs Road. By 1860, Spencer had a schoolhouse and three churches; First Methodist Church (founded1861), Second Methodist Church (founded 1861) and Baptist Church (founded 1865). In 1872, James Cady bought480 acres of land near present day Griggs Road for $4 per acre which he named "Cedar Rapids". He set up a lumberyard there with his brother-in-law Jesse Boothe on the land which became known as Boothe Park after him. In 1881 Charles Bowers purchased 640 acres of what is now southwest corner of Main Street/Griggs Road from Cady for $25 per acre which he called "Pleasant Hill". On this property were situated buildings such as the Masonic Temple (dedicated 1886), Covenant Baptist church (dedicated 1893), Paintsville Creamery & Bakery (dedicated 1897), Post Office Building (dedicated 1907) and Our Lady Queen Of Peace School (built 1912). In 1901 when Spencer Township was organized four new blocks were added: North 2nd Street/Milford Avenue NW, South 3rd Street/Willow Grove Avenue SE Corner w/Iowa Terminal Railroad tracks & Centre Square between those two streets., East 4th Street Corner w/Iowa Terminal Railroad tracks just outside city limits

One such pouch was created by John Wickersham Jr., who worked for Master Lock Co.. It featured three compartments: one for each hand held weapon; another compartment for ammo; and finally, a third compartment that could be used as a carrying case or storage area for grenades or other munitions. Later on, gun pouches started becoming popular among law enforcement officers and firefighters throughout the world. They are often designed specifically for this purpose and can carry multiple firearms without causing any inconvenience to either party involved. In 1907, the Spencer Dam was built along the Missouri River to provide water for agricultural purposes and also power for industry in Spencer Township. The dam has been replaced multiple times but its importance as a physical landmark makes it worth preserving. In 1951, the first grade school in Spencer opened. In 1969, the town of Mount Pleasant merged with Spencer to form a combined municipality with a population of 2,340 people

The war led to increased competition for jobs and poverty took hold in the town. In 1920, Spencer's population was only 150 people. Despite this decline in population, Spencer continues to be an important community today due to its strong tradition of entrepreneurship and its role in the local agricultural industry
