In 1860, he married Sarah Jane Iverson and they began to raise crops and sell goods along the river. In 1907, Spencer incorporation occurred when its citizens voted to join together with neighboring towns to form the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area. During World War II, many locals volunteered to serve in the military or work on war projects such as building bridges across the river. Afterward, many businesses opened up around here such as banks and restaurants. The town has seen some growth over time but still maintains its old-school feel with its small-town atmosphere and friendly people.
