Spencer, Iowa is a small town in McLean County, Iowa, United States. Spencer was founded on November 1, 1854 by James Fenton and his wife Hannah. The community name derived from the Spencer family's farm near the original site of the town. Spencer was platted on December 3, 1855 by J.W.Gorman and H.H.Lincoln with a population of twenty-one people. In 1860, Spencer was burned down by Union troops during the Civil War as part of General Ulysses S. Grant's pre-emptive strike against Confederate forces in eastern Iowa Territory. The village rebuilt and grew steadily until it reached its peak in the early 1900s when it had a population of over one thousand people; however, this prosperity vanished after World War I resulted in a decline in agricultural production and an increase in manufacturing jobs within Spencer Village which eventually outstripped that of agriculture statewide between 1920 and 1930." The growth of Spencer Village came to an end around 1930 when automobiles became popular among residents and businesses began to shift away from horse-drawn vehicles to trucks or cars for transportation purposes; this change has also been attributed to problems experienced during the Great Depression such as increased unemployment rates among villagers who lost their jobs in industry while those working outside of agriculture enjoyed continued prosperity." Today, Spencer is known for its small farmers market located at the square east side of town square - open daily from 6am to 2pm - where local produce is sold along with homemade breads, jams and other baked goods made from local ingredients."
