A one-room schoolhouse serving the village remained operational until 1905. In 1902, Spencer had a population of 329; however, this number increased to 1,075 by 1910 due to the arrival of the railroad from Chicago via Spencer Junction (now Grinnell).During World War I, many soldiers from Spencer enlisted with the Union army and some residents donated land to build new military barracks and artillery ranges. When the war ended on November 11th 1918 most of these buildings were destroyed as a result of being used as munitions dumps during the war. After the war ended many residents moved away and few remain today due to its rural setting and lack of Major League Baseball (MLB) teams
