Spencer is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. Spencer is the county seat of Spencer County. It was named after George Spencer, an explorer who explored the area in 1836. The first settlement in Spencer occurred in 1837 when Methodist missionaries founded a small town called Beaver Dam on the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 had a population of 1,500 people. In 1845, the townsite of Spencer was organized as a township and became one of eighteen counties within Iowa under the jurisdiction of the Iowa General Assembly. In 1854, Congress passed legislation creating four Indian reservations in what are now Iowa: Southeastern Sioux Nation (now Standing Rock Sioux Nation), Northern Cheyenne Nation (now Northern Cheyenne Tribe), Western Folk (later Wichita) Tribe, and EasternIllinois Sac and Fox Agency. When these reservations were created, Spencer became part of Indian Territory instead ofIowa Territory because it lay east of the Missouri River watershed. To accommodate this change in status, Indian Territory was divided into five districts – North Dakota Territory (including present-day Fargo), South Dakota Territory (including present-day Spearfish and Pierre), Nebraska Territory (present-day Omaha), Utah Territorial District No. 2 (excluding today's Ogden City), and Kansas Territories No. 3 to 8 inclusive including present day Topeka and Wichita Falls In 1863, Union troops burned down all twenty buildings within Indian Territory's Kearney district for disobeying orders to stop fighting at Doniphan Creek near Topeka while grazing their horses there; this event is considered to be one of the most significant events duringthe American Civil War that occurred outside Kansas borders

The town's main industry until the late 1800s was agriculture, but it also engaged in manufacturing and trade. Spencer is home to several museums, including the Spencer Museum of Art and the Sheldon Memorial Library.
Spencer was founded in 1851 by John Spencer and his brother James. The brothers were pioneering farmers and entrepreneurs who started the town on a small farm near what is now Burlington, Iowa. Spencer's success as a farmer led to him starting a flour mill, which became one of the largest in the area. In 1874, he sold his business to fellow farmer George Kapp. Kapp built a large home in Spencer and began using it as its main office for businesses in the town. He also invested money into businesses such as lumberyards and whisky distilleries. His wife Evalyn (née Morse) helped run these businesses until her death in 1912. After Evalyn's death, Kapp continued running the businesses alone until his death in 1928. The towns growth came to an abrupt halt during World War I when many of its residents joined the military or left to fight in Europe. However, after the war ended, Spencer resumed its growth as a farming community with new industries beginning to emerge such as machine shops and breweries. In 1951, Spencer was chosen by Iowa Governor Vernon Daley to be part of Des Moines metropolitan area which included all of Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Amesbury Heights and other smaller towns within its boundaries
