Spencer, Iowa is a small town in the extreme south-central corner of Iowa. Situated on the banks of the Missouri River, it is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The population of Spencer was 1,812 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Urbandale metropolitan area. The first settlers in Spencer originated from eastern Kentucky and were led by Colonel John Swayne who arrived in 1839. He founded a trading post called Swayne's Station on the riverbank and named his community after himself. Spencer also became known for its honey production which was important to early settlers because it allowed them to sell their product directly to consumers. In 1847, General James Fenton moved his headquarters from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Spencer and continued using Swayne's Station as their primary supply depot until he moved his Headquarters eastward in 1858. In 1872, Gideon Wellman established another trading post at Big Sandy near present day Burlington Township in southeastern Spencer County. This location served as an important crossroads for traders traveling between Chicago and St Louis during this time period. The Post Office at Big Sandy was first opened on November 14th, 1872 under auspices of President Ulysses S Grant with mail delivered twice a week from Council Bluffs via stagecoach from there to Sioux City; however, this service ended due to budget cuts in 1870s. It wasn't until 1907 that Spencer had its own school district which still operates today (K-8). The original school buildings were built just west of downtown off US Highway 6 about two miles north of where I-35 now exits onto Southold Road (now US Highway 36). The current building began construction in 1951 adjacent to what was then known as North High School which housed grades K-8 before being renamed North Elementary School when it merged with adjacent East High School into one large school district campus that included all elementary through high schools includingNorth Central High School which became South Central High School when it joined forces with neighboring West Central Middle/High Schools in 2006). After years of struggle through several mergers over many years culminating with state takeover during the late 1990s following a campaign spearheaded by then Superintendent Rick Egan (D), current Superintendent Rick Wallenstein has seen continued success bringing new businesses and jobs back into our city limits while continuing progress made within old boundaries such as increasing enrollment at North Central through innovative marketing techniques while maintaining excellent academic standards across all grades 9th - 12th inclusive; having developed an excellent relationship with neighboring Cedar Rapids public school districts – resulting not only increased student transfers but also increased property values within our boundaries
