In Sioux City, Iowa, theSioux City Amateur Astronomers Club has been meeting since 1922 to observe the night sky. The club has a variety of telescopes available for inspection and use. In 1938, they erected a new telescope on top of the old library building. The original scope was donated by Dr. H.C. White of Omaha and is still in use today. After World War II, the club installed a new telescope in the basement of their clubhouse which became known as "The Big One." In 1976, they shifted their meetings from monthly to quarterly so that more people could come and join them during odd months or when there was no moon due to weather conditions. From 1978-1982 they built an additional telescope which is now known as "The Little One." On November 20, 1862, the last major battle fought between American forces against Native Americans took place at Standing Rock Indian Reservation when General David Sully's brigade attacked an encampment of about 800 Native Americans led by Chief Sitting Bull. The Battle of Standing Rock ended with a loss for both sides but it was one of the largest engagements between American and Native American troops in history. After World War II, many farmers moved into Sioux City from all over eastern Illinois and northern Indiana because they found good farming opportunities there. As development continued throughout the 1960s and 1970s, nightlife became more important to many residents than agriculture; however, today's economy relies heavily on transportation companies such as Interstate 80 and Route 3 which provide jobs within city limits
