Sioux City, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa. It was founded in 1851 as Sioux City Fayette County Seat and remained so until it became a city on December 3, 1907. The population was 98,691 at the 2010 census. Sioux City is the seat of Fayette County, which was formed from parts of Muscatine and Pottawatomie counties in 1853. The name "Sioux" is from the Ojibwa language and means "friends." The first town site for Sioux City was located east of present-day Sioux Falls on what is now US Highway 606. In 1851, when US 606 crossed the Iowa River within present-day downtown Sioux City, citizens voted to rename the town "Sioux City". The original plat for SiouxCity included land that forms today's northwest side of Downtown and much of what is now west Side Park (formerly called Prairie View Cemetery). The early years were difficult for Sioux City; during the 1850s it faced numerous attacks by Native Americans and settlers alike. However, through hard work, creativity and community spirit, Sioux City gradually grew into one of America's most vibrant towns. By 1870, nearly all of what remains today east side Park had been developed including Central Park (now known as First National Bank Plaza), SouthSide Market (now known as Prairie View A&M University) and State Street/Downtown Mall (now known as Cavallo Place). By 1900 most residents lived on or near Second Street between Garrison Avenue and Dodge Street; this area still constitutes much of central downtownpresent-day SiouxCity today. In 1907, with portions of Muscatine County annexed to Fayette County,[2] Dakota Territory was created - an area lying mostly outside the current boundaries of Iowa state - giving new life to efforts to create a city in central Iowa. On December 3rd that year – thanks largely to donations from several local businesses –[3] SiouxCity became a city under charter ordinance signed by Mayor John Laughlin.[4][5] At its peak population there were over 100,,000 people living inside its limits![6][7] The great economyof World War II saw significant increases in business activity throughout downtown; however natural disasters such as floods and tornadoes also struck during this time period resulting in extensive damage to infrastructureand loss of life both human & property . In recent years various aspectsof downtown have undergone renovation or redevelopment including:FirstBank Plaza / Dakota Gateway Center; Pioneer Square / Main Library Annex; Civic Center / Waterfront District;South Side Market Historic District; North Side Park

The Sioux City, Iowa area was first settled by the Sioux in the early 1800s. The town was founded in 1851 and named after the nearby Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. In 1862, fighting between Union and Confederate forces resulted in the Battle of Sioux City, which left several people dead. In 1865, the United States acquired the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation and incorporated it into the new Indian Territory. The town continued to grow until it became a city in 1912.
