Sioux City, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa, and the county seat of Waterloo County. The population was 54,151 at the 2010 census. Sioux City is located on the Missouri River and is bordered by Omaha to the north and east, Dubuque to the south-east, Rock Island to the south-west, and Council Bluffs to the west. The first permanent settlement in what is now Sioux City was made on July 12, 1854 when James Fenton built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river. The town's name was derived from an incident which took place there that summer: A group of Sioux Indians led by Chief Joseph surrounded Fenton's cabin while he slept and threatened to burn it down if he did not surrender his goods within 24 hours. Fenton refused to give up his goods until he learned that they were only weapons owned by other Dakota Indians and not any of his own people. Consequently, when members of the tribe found out about this incident they began calling us "Fentonville". In 1855, an act was passed in Congress which provided for Territorial government in Nebraska Territory; as a result, Sioux City became part of Nebraska. In 1861, after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was issued, many Ft Dodge citizens left their homes for Kansas because they thought that freedom would come over South Dakota Territory rather than through federal proclamation alone. On October 20th of that year (1861), Sioux City residents voted 3-to-1 in favor of joining Douglas County as one unit with Omaha despite its lack of facilities or services available to those living there such as water resources or schools. As a result of this vote Union Pacific Railroad constructed two tracks through Sioux City so that goods could be hauled into Omaha instead Of travelling thru Ft Dodge which at that time was mostly agricultural land used for cattle grazing etc... This event helped set off what would become known as "the great flour boom" during which small towns all over America started manufacturing flour for local Consumption rather then shipping it all across country

In 1836, the United States purchased of land from the Sioux Nation and began to develop it into a town. The town was founded on December 12, 1836 by a group of American Indians led by Chief Black Hawk. By 1840, Sioux City had become one of the largest settlements in Iowa. It continued to grow until it reached its peak in the early 20th century. during this time, Sioux City was home to an estimated 100,000 people and played an important role in central Iowa politics.
