In 1990, Sioux City Optics merged with Keystone Camera & Video Company (now known as Keystone Cameras) which had been founded in 1984 by Don Kapp and Drue Burroughs. Sioux City was founded by prospectors on December 12, 1868, as an agricultural community named for General George Armstrong Custer during his final campaign against Sitting Bull's forces in 1876. In 1907, it became a commercial center with construction of the first interstate highway in Iowa. The city's growth continued through World War II with its rise as a manufacturing center for munitions and aircraft production; however, since the late 1990s Sioux City has seen a decline in its economic importance due to suburban development around it. The namesake of Sioux City is General George Armstrong Custer who fought during 1876 against Sitting Bull and his forces at what is now known as Custer Battlefield near present-day Sioux City. Settlers named their new town for General Custer after he had been killed during that campaign three weeks earlier at Fort Abraham Lincoln west ofmodern day Omaha (now North Dakota). The name "Custer" was likely chosen because there were no other real leaders among Sitting Bull's more than 20 followers when he surrendered on July 25, 1887 to Ulysses S. Grant's troops following several months of successful guerrilla warfare across much of Indian Territory including what are now Nebraska and South Dakota

In 1907, the Sioux City & Rock Island Railroad merged into the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railway. The company was sold to a group of investors in 1912 and went bankrupt in 1914.
