He named it Prairie du Sac after Prairie du Chien – an Indian word meaning "the best place" – which he had seen while traveling through Canada near Lake Huron during the 1840s on his Great Western Railroad expedition. The first Europeans to visit Sioux City were French traders in the early seventeenth century. The area was first known as "The buffalo country" because of the abundance of buffalo that roamed there. In 1829, a group of Mormons founded a Mormon Settlement on the site of what is now the UI campus. A year later, Iowa was admitted as a state and Sioux City became its capital. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s, due in part to its status as an important transportation center for goods and people across Iowa and Nebraska. The city's economy also grew thanks to its abundant natural resources, such as coal, oil, uranium, and grain. After World War II, Sioux City experienced rapid growth again due to the expanding American consumer market.During the 1970s and 1980s, Sioux City underwent significant redevelopment which created new neighborhoods including Hillsboro Heights and West Side Park. During this time period, Sioux City also became known for its innovative planning processes which led to some of Iowa's most successful urban renewal projects such as Hillcrest Plaza and First Avenue South
