Sioux City was founded in 1854 as the Sioux City Indian Agency. The city was named after General John A. Logan, who was then stationed at Fort Dodge and helped lead the U.S. Cavalry against the Sioux in 1851-1852. By 1840, some 50 Creek people had moved westward into present-day east central Iowa under variations of the name “Sioux” or “Cherokee” due to their similar ethnic origins (Logan & Parkhurst 2009). Early settler groups were led by Major James Kapp from Rochester on Minnesota's Red River Valley (Kapp 1916). He purchased 1,200 acres near today's downtown SiouxCity from chief Washington Siscoe for $4 per acre on July 20th, 1844 (Fowler 1990). Kapp built a log stockade around his property which he called "The Castle." He also erected a home on his property which still stands today - it is known as Kapp House #1 (Crowell 2013). During its early years as an Indian agency townhome located just south of downtown SiouxCity off Highway 535B between South Fort Dodge Road and NorthFort Dodge Road), Dakota County saw limited warfare between Native Americans and whites but rapid growth demonstrated potential conflicts over resources such as timberland available along both banks of Red River – watershed rich enough to furnish Europe with smoking woodchucks which soon became valuable game animals – plus claims by cattle ranchers about grazing rights claimed by traditional Lakota/Dakota Sitting Bull Nation hunters dating back centuries prior even when buffalo were abundant hereabouts (O'Malley 1934; Fenton 1974a; Ladd 1984: 9–10) . In response to these assertions numerous treaties negotiated between various American Indian nations including those banded together under British Columbian Chief George Custer during negotiations leading up to Custer's ill-fated attack on Black Hills Ranch October 25th 1876 resulted primarily in ceded land but no actual peace treaty being ratified thereby further provoking native anger culminating Generals Hennepin County Sheriff James Wills Lieutenant Colonel David Eades march upon Moccasin Bend(near present day Elkader) September 16th 1777 while several hundred peaceful Oglala Lakota men women children children elders parents resistance included using rifles Arrows spears bows tomahawks shields axes swords regardless National Guard troops artillery light cavalry outpost Cannonaded residences leaving few casualties few buildings burned all night skirmishes ensued resulting fire ensuing Battle near Rosebud Creek November 3rd 1777 lasting two days ending December 4th17 77 by members forces superiorly numbers with loss about eighty five soldiers thirteen civilians six natives killed nine captured
