Sioux City, Iowa is a city in the US state of Iowa. The population was 506 at the 2010 census. Sioux City is the county seat of Polk County. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Sioux City were founded by Father James Walsh in 1851. The city was named after General George Armstrong Custer and his unit, the 5th Cavalry Regiment which had fought in the Dakota War of 1862-1863. In 1872, a post office called Sioux City was established, but it never grew very large and closed in 1903. In 1907, John Fetterman developed what would become Omaha Park on land that he had bought from the government for $9,500. Fetterman wanted to create an amusement park with water rides and other attractions as well as housing for workers who would build his new streetcar line between Omaha and Des Moines. The park opened on October 15, 1907 and became one of Omaha's most popular tourist destinations for decades. Eventually, however, Fetterman lost interest in developing Omaha Park and sold it to two brothers—Jimmie and Leslie Jensen—in 1951 for $2 million dollars. They changed its name to Walt Disney World (then known as Epcot). In 1957–1958, Indianola Corporation built American Airlines Flight 447 from New York City to Sioux City using a combined Boeing 747-100/800 jetliner/aircraft family design that pioneered turbojet travel within airspace then reserved for jets only; this made Sioux City one of only two cities ever served by mainline United Airlines service outside North America at that time (the other being Vancouver BC).
