Pella is a city in and the county seat of Pella County, Iowa, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Des Moines Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Pella was John Fritchey in 1853. By 1860, there were 12 families living in Pella. The town was platted on May 15, 1865 by a group of farmers led by Captain Arthur Sibley. At that time it consisted of just over one thousand acres (400 ha). In 1868, George Stephenson discovered oil shale near present-day Pella and used it to make asphalt for cars and trucks. This discovery helped spur industry in the area which developed into agriculture and other businesses such as Swen Nordquist's grocery store and Wessner Tire & Rubber Co.. In 1892, Averill Laughlin patented a process for turning coal from mines into coke using an open-air furnace called a "piston kiln". This helped spark another period of growth for Pella with heavy industry becoming common during this time including a foundry, dye works, flour mill, lumberyard and more small businesses developing around it. In 1932 the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company moved its operations out of town after their plant became too large for local conditions to manage; however some production remains until today at their old plant off US Highway 62 east of downtown Pella. On July 1st 1907 two women named Jennie Beeson and Ada Cook set out from Council Bluffs on horseback to cross Iowa’s Great Sioux River Valley they were only days away from reaching Omaha when they fell ill with typhoid fever before reaching their destination They continued travelling but died within 24 hours after crossing the river They are buried near Ottawa National Cemetery #1 in Nebraska City NE . Jennie's body lay unburied until 1979 when she was interred at Mount Pleasant Cemetery #1 with her sister Ada Cook who also died during the trip There has been much research done trying to understand better why Jennie contracted typhoid fever as few recorded cases survive beyond five years She may have contracted it because she had never seen water or traveled among people so close to India Jennie Beeson is also commemorated on Interstate 40 northbound between Kansas City and Omaha along road number 95A where route marker IL 33 turns off I-40 onto highway 95AAbout 5 miles south lies Mount Pleasant Cemetery #1 2nd largest cemetery west of St Louis Missouri located just outside Ottawa National CemeteryThis cemetery covers 624 acres (261 ha) with gravesites stretching back over 100 yearsThere are currently plans to move Jennings' remains back home to Mount Pleasant Cemetery so that all her family can be together againShe was an American woman working herself while traveling across Midwestern United States during World War I
Pella was founded in 1854 by John Stephenson and his wife, Anna. Stephenson had been a settler in what is now Pella for twenty years when he and Anna arrived in the area. They began to farm land and eventually built a log cabin. The Stephenson family continued to operate the farm until 1918, when they sold it to the town of Pella.
