Pella was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1851. The first post office in Pella was established in 1852. The town name derives from "Pella", a surname of Norwegian origin which means "hillocks". The town has been home to a number of early pioneers and families that have made their mark on the history of the area including: Halsey Welling (1830-1912), Geo. N. Wells (1864-1945), Averill Fuller (1850-1920), John Ewart Emmons (1873-1970), Everett George “Everett” Cobbold (1907-1993) and his wife Esther Cobbold Burritt(1915-)
