In 1911, residents voted to name their new town after General John J. Pershing because he had been such a strong advocate for military service during World War I. On October 2, 1912, General Pershing made his famous speech "A Century After" from the steps of the old courthouse in which he announced that he would accept US citizenship and become "the Colonel-in-Chief." At long last there were two Ottumswans - one living and one dead - with honorable mention on history books! In 1922, the Ottumwáa Veterans Memorial Museum opened to commemorate World War I veterans from Ottumwa and nearby towns. In 1984, the town acquired a piece of land along Ulysses S Grant Boulevard that became known as "The Grant Park". The park features a fountain with a bronze statue of Ulysses S Grant (1839–1924), which once graced topiary along one side of the park while another side housed an amusement park complete with midway and other rides.
