The Ottumwa Creek flows through the town and forms its eastern border. Other major localities include Marshalltown and Waukee to the south, Cedar Rapids to the east and Grinnell to the north. Ottumwa was founded by Germans in 1854 as "Emmendorf". It became Ottumwa in 1879 after it was renamed for John C. Ottumwabbe, an official with the Dakota Territory government who had been instrumental in creating that territory from parts of Minnesota and Iowa. In 1905, Ottumwabbe donated land to build a public school; that school still stands today and serves as one of the town's primary functions. In 1907, Ottumwabbe donated another piece of land to form a park which included a playground, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, a water tower and more than 100 homes. That park also includes two large stores - The grocery store (now known as First National) on Main Street and The hardware store (now known as Big Three Hardware) on East Market Street - both now closed but still extant within walking distance of each other since their original construction date back to 1908! It wasn't until 1916 that farming began to take hold in what would become Ottumwa; during World War I there were few military personnel stationed in or near the town so agriculture took over as its mainstay while people worked elsewhere outside of war-time shortages due largely to railroads being built right around them! In 1923, when Iowa statehood came into effect, most residents moved into larger towns like Des Moines or Cedar Rapids because those areas had more resources available for them once they became states! However, many residents of Ottumarwabbe remain here today working aspects such as tourism or food production unchanged by changes in state policy! Today much has changed sinceJohn C.Otummawabe gifted his land for a public school; however some things have not changed such as community spirit which continues strong even when times are tough thanks largely to events like fall festival & pancake breakfast fundraiser
