Ottumwa, Iowa is a small town in Story County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Iowa City Metropolitan Area. The Ottumwa post office was established in 1868, and became a town in 1927. The community was named for John Ottumwa, an early settler on the present-day east side of the city of Sioux City. John Ottumwa had come to America from Germany in 1839 and began his career as a farm hand in what is now Ottumwa. In 1868, he married Mary Ann (née Fenton). They located their first home on what is now Main Street near the current post office buildings. In 1927, residents of Ottumwa voted to become a town under the laws of Iowa; the vote followed similar votes by towns throughout Story County that year. Under its new government structure,Ottumwasta municipality with a Mayor and six Selectmen who were responsible for economic development and public welfare within their jurisdiction; as well as providing fire protection and street repairs. The original Town Hall building still stands today on Main Street just east of mile marker 619A US Highway 20/Route 66 which leads into Sioux City

The first settler in Ottumwa was James L. Mclntyre and his family on July 10, 1854. The present day town was founded on April 12, 1884 by George Haggerty and others from Michigan Township. In 1907 there were only 15 people living in Ottumwa when it became a city. By 1920 there were over 350 residents and by 1970 the population hadgrown to 1,600 people Ottumwans are known for their favorite fruit - apples - and produce such items as pies, applesauce, pancakes etc.. They also enjoy fishing (especially bass), playing golf (the local course has a pro shop), camping, spending time with friends and family., watching football or baseball games at local stadiums or outside on the town commons., playing many types of board games,, listening to music from various genres through headphones while eating lunch or dinner,,,, going out for ice cream after work,,,, walking around town during the day or night,, getting lost in history either reading about it online or visiting historical sites like Riverbend National Historical Park
The Ottumwa Sioux tribe had lived in the area for centuries before European settlers arrived in the early 1800s. The town was founded by a group of Ottumwa chiefs in 1853, and its name is derived from their traditional language, Otoo. The town was renamed Ottumwa after General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War.
