By 1860, Smith had erected over 50 homes in what is now downtown OttumwA John F Smith's legacy includes two important aspects of current day life in OttUMWA: first he started bringing electricity to rural areas through small generators that he built himself; second he donated land for a state park that remains one of the most popular attractions in town today
The Ottumwa Sioux tribe, also known as the Ottumwas, were a Native American tribe that lived on the banks of the Des Moines River in Iowa. The Ottumwas occupied their present-day location for more than two centuries, first coming to live there in the mid-19th century. They lost their land to European colonists in 1838 and eventually relocated to what is now South Dakota. In 1856, when the United States acquired Iowa from Great Britain, it included all of present-day Iowa and northern Nebraska. The US government decided to give most of this land to the Sioux nation in order to protect them from white settlers. The Sioux Nation did not receive any of the remaining land, which was donated by General James H. Smith as part of his Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868.
