The first known inhabitants of what would become Ottumwa were Native Americans called the Winnebago and their predecessors lived here for more than 10 centuries until they were forcibly removed in 1851 by United States military forces during the American Civil War. The city’s origins can be traced back to 1851 when three men – John Cavanaugh, James Hickey and Moses Hickey – pooled their money and set out to found a new town on the banks of the Ottumwa River. The town quickly became popular due to its location at a crossing point for wagon routes connecting Illinois with Iowa City and other nearby settlements. The town prospered thanks to its location and its easy access to goods available both locally and across state lines. By 1920, however, Osthamawa had experienced some significant growth problems which limited its ability to meetoding demand from settlers living elsewhere in Iowa or from people looking for a more rural lifestyle outside OFA (the original five states comprising modern-day Iowa). As a result of these challenges, Osthamawadeclined as an important center for economic development in central Iowa by this time period. In addition, Osthamawa’s population began declining as several factors including advances in transportation made it easier for people living elsewhere to reach OTA without having to journey through downtown Ottumwa; moreover, many residents decided that life was better away from larger metropolitan areas where opportunities were abound but qualityoflife was lower Overall,. In contrast,, significantly augmented growth occurred within current-day Ulysses S Grant National Forest which has helped keep Osthamawa alive despite declines during recent decades………………….
In 1847, the Ottumwa Sioux band of Indians attacked a white settler's house. The settler's three children were killed in the attack, and the settler took refuge with his friends on a hilltop. When the Sioux arrived, they found only two of their own people there, and one of the friends had already left for safety. The Sioux burned down the hilltop houses before leaving.
