It is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Ottumwa was George Heimlich on October 15, 1854. The town site was laid out by John Fetterman on November 8th and named after his brother-in-law Otto Heimlich who came to the area from Germany in 1829. TheFettermans were among the earliest settlers in what would become Ottumwa. In 1857 Isaac Sargent bought land east of present day Ottumwas Creek and laid out what would become downtown Ottumwa. On January 3rd, 1860 an act of Congress approved the platting of a town square in center of present day Ottumwahas Creek with Main Street as its main thoroughfare and four blocks east of that square serving as Streets 1-4. This square became known as "The Square" or "The Park." In 1871 Elisha Appleton donated land to use for a public school; this school would eventually be named Appleton Junior College and now part of Drake University. In 1902 Charles Wirth donated land to build a small hospital; this hospital became known as Wirth Hospital which still stands today across from downtown Ottumwahas Creek on First Street between Washington and Meridian Streets inside the original block built by Charles Wirths family foundation in 1902/3 when they purchased property adjacent to their old hardware store building at Second and Walnut Streets which they then remodeled into their new home continuing until it burned down on December 17th 1990 during a heavy snowstormovie production staff had returned early from shoot number 5229 at old Regency Cinema just south of downtown OTUMWASCreek burning through all but one wall resulting in major damage also including extensive loss of topsoil within about 2 feet depth along entire north side walls where once there had been several acres Olmsted Nursery plants located And over 30 tree seedlings nursery stock being grown Unexploded ordnance includes unexploded mortar rounds dating back to WW2
