Since the early 1800s, Ottumwa, Iowa has been a center for firearms manufacturing. Gun magazines have played an important role in this history, and the city has long been home to one of the largest gun stores in the Midwest. In addition to its gun store, Ottumwa also had a military armory and arsenal. The arsenal was used extensively during World War I and II, and it is still in use today. The armory also served as a storage depot for guns that were confiscated from Axis forces during World War II. Today, the armory is open to the public as a museum. The first gun magazine in Ottumwa was established in 1892 by Elisha Richards. At that time, there were only two handguns per capita in America, so Richards decided to establish his own magazine to provide additional handgun availability. Early magazines were designed primarily for civilian use; however, over time they became more specialized and began to offer ammunition as well. By 1910, Richards had retired from his business and handed over control of his presses and magazines to his son-in-law John Winters Jr., who renamed them Ottumwa Armory & Ammunition Company Ltd. After World War I ended with conflict between Europe and America (which saw many arsenals closed), Winters restarted production at the company with new equipment including an automatic feeding machine which enabled him to produce large quantities of ammunition quickly. In 1922 Dover Publications Inc., parent company of Bluebook Magazine founded by Harry Blackstone III became publisher of both Ottumwaa Armory & Ammunition Company Ltd., which continued publication under that name until 1984 when it merged with American National Firearms Corporation (ANF) into National Industries Incorporated (NII). NII was then sold off within NACOMCO Holdings Corp., now Academia Fine Arts Private Limited until it was sold again on August 1st 2009 unto private investors via an initial public offering (IPO). On September 7th 2009 Academia Fine Arts Private Limited announced plans to close its doors permanently due to heavy financial pressures brought on by increased competition from online retailers such as Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing LLC run by Amazon Web Services LLP On October 16th 2009 Academia Fine ArtsPrivate Limited announced they would sell their entire library excepting 10guns worth of rare booksRare Books Department

The Ottumwa community was founded in 1854 by German immigrants as a farming village on the banks of the Ottumwa River. In 1885, when Ottumwa became an incorporated town, it had a total population of only 50 people. However, over time, Ottumwa grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources: abundant water resources and rich farmland that supported agriculture and livestock production until recent times. Today, there are over 150 businesses in town including several dozen factories and other manufacturing businesses; a library with more than 100 books; numerous churches which serve as cultural landmarks for the community; two high schools (Ottumwa Senior High School and Ottumwa Intermediate School); two parks (Lakeview Park & Highland Park Park); four schools (Ottumwah Senior High School, OttUMWA Intermediate School, Southridge Elementary/Middle School & West Valley Junior-Senior High School), three movie theaters (the Adirondack Theatre Company's Lakeview 3Dplex - now closed - operated by Regal Cinemas until 2008; Fenton County's only IMAX theater - operated by Regal Cinemas from 2007 to 2013) ; three restaurants including Two Hands BBQ + Tavern - now closed since 2009; two bowling alleys – one nowclosed; six retail services - general storeowner John Gorman operates Sunrise Realty Services on Main Street while also providing antique sales services; five thousand inhabitants within commuting distance offer many opportunities for employment outside the home such as professional or personal care services such as pet sitting or lawn care; eight miles (13 kilometers) of Interstate Highway 40 provide access to local shopping malls and restaurants while providing transportation options into central Iowa for residents who may need to leave town for work or other reasons.

Ottumwa, Iowa, is a city in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The Ottumwa name may be derived from an English word meaning "plain," or "vale." The first settler in what is now Ottumwa was Levi Coffin in 1837. A post office called Ottumwa was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1854, the Union Pacific Railroad built a line from Council Bluffs to Ottumwa; this made Ottumwaht more accessible for settlers and brought new businesses and residents to the town. By 1860, there were also stores and a church located in town. By 1870, there were also mills and a school district that included both Ottumwaht and neighboring towns such as Granite City and Waterloo. In 1890, when Johnston County was created from part of Johnson County, the new county seat went to Ottumwa; however, no trains ran through the village so it remained unimportant until after World War II when it saw rapid growth due to military commissaries being set up here during that time. In 1951-1953 the then largest employer here (the John Deere Company) closed their plant due to recession; however they reopened later that same year with more modern technology which led to further growth for the village over ensuing years. Today’s downtown area contains many local businesses including several restaurants/bars/cafés as well as two large shopping malls with over 1 million square feet of floor space each - one near Interstate 35A west of town on Highway 10E and another just east of I-35A off US 24 between Highway 6W and Business Loop 16N (formerly Highway 2). Downtown also houses numerous government buildings like an courthouse/judicial center as well as three high schools - one private (Ottuma High School), one public (Ottuma East High School), and one magnet high school (West Township High School). There are also three churches located within walking distance of downtown: First Baptist Church on West Main Street which opened in 1925 followed by Christ LutheranChurch on South Third Street which opened in 1927; then Stonington PresbyterianChurch on North Fourth Street which opened in 1962; Lastly there is Native American powwow ground located about a mile northeast of downtown along Route 9W between Old Noakie Wells Road & Elmader Drive
The Ottumwa Indian Reservation was established in 1851, and the first post office on the reservation was established in 1857. The present town of Ottumwa was founded in 1903 by Hungarian immigrants.
