The settlers named their new town after Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de La Salle’s aide-de-camp during his expedition against the Sioux in 1824–25. There were only six families living in Burlington when it was founded; by 1830 there were twenty-six families living there. By 1840, Burlington had grown to over one hundred residents.
