In 1871, construction began on the Ottawa Railroad which linked Ottumwah with Burlington Heights outside of Cedar Rapids; this helped to revive interest in town and led to increased development around it including annexation by Cedar Rapids in 1897. In 1902, Ottumwah united with neighboring towns Clearwater and Sioux City forming what would become known as the "Ottumwa-Clearwater Union". During World War II, much of the infrastructure needed for production within Omaha sprang up in Ottumwah; such as munitions plants and airplane factories; this created many jobs for locals while also helping contribute to wartime production totals statewide. After the war ended, little real redevelopment took place until the late 1990s when new technology parks arrived in town which has since led to significant growth over this time period
