The Ottumwa Rifle Association was founded in 1960. In the early days, the organization consisted of a few constituent members and conducted its operations out of their home. In 1967, rifle clubs were formed throughout the community and the Ottumwa Rifle Association became an official club affiliate. The first NRA annual meeting was held in Ottumwa in 1970 and it was then that they decided to move their headquarters to the city.
Ottumwa is a city in Douglas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census. The Ottumwa community is located on the Ottawa River and is part of the Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Ottumwa was James Wills in 1854. It was named for John Ottumwa, an early settler from Vermont who had arrived in 1846. A post office called Ottumwa was established in 1857, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1870, a group of Scandinavian farmers founded the town of Fayetteville on the east side of the Ottawa River. When they ran out of land to grow crops and built their own homes, they were known as "Fayetteville people." They continued to use that name through most of the 19th century. In 1908, when Douglas County was organized, Fayetteville became part of it. The townspeople decided to change their name to Ottumwa because it sounded more like home than Fayetteville did. The first owner of a house in Ottumwa was Hosea Eaton; he moved into his house on Delaware Avenue on November 12th, 1875. He and his wife Charity built additional houses over time and brought up children there as well as raising pigs and cows on their farmstead which still stands today across from Ottumwans High School (now Washington-Harding Middle School). One interesting note about this early period is that there were no schools hereabouts until after World War I when local parents began sending their children to school with money saved up from farming chores or homemade supplies they cobbled together themselves. It wasn’t until 1925 that a small school building opened its doors for students hereabouts; it served as an annex to First Congregational Church until 1951 when it moved into its present location across Main Street from Washington-Harding Middle School which then became known as “Ottumanua” HS (later renamed “Washington Harding Middle School”). Today’s downtown area off Delaware Ave., stretching back blocks NE/SW along Main St., has been considerably gentrified over recent decades due largely to oil exploration and fracking activity goingon just north & east thereof (& surrounding neighborhoods), though some original businesses have managed to stay open despite difficult times (& displacement by ensuing development.) residential areas extending southward toward Ottawa river continue unchanged although some residents have opted for larger homes closer unto commercial areas
