The Ottumwa Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1908. Airguns were first introduced to the Ottumwa area in 1912 when an individual, J.C. Hargrave, imported a single-shot airgun from England. The club purchased two rifles and four pistols from Mr. Hargrave, making it one of the earliest rifle and pistol clubs in this part of the country. In 1916, Ottumwa Rifle and Pistol Club established itself as a society with privileges similar to those enjoyed by Rifle and Pistol Clubs throughout the United States. The club soon became involved in firearms competitions across Iowa and even won a silver medal at the 1916 National Armory Show in New York City. In 1922, the Ottumwans joined forces with other rifle societies located in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Waterloo to form what is now known as the IA Championship Shooting Association (ICSA). In 1899, when railroad companies began construction through Polk County, they chose Ottumwah as the site for their depot because it was isolated from other settlements and could be easily accessed by cars or wagons carrying materials necessary for construction. During World War II, many jobs were created in local munitions plants; however, few people lived within town limits because farming took priority over industry during that time period. After the war ended and new industries emerged such as retailing and entertainment development (such as nightlife spots), much attention turned towards Ottumwah and other nearby towns as potential sites for growth. However, no one ever came up with a real plan to make these areas viable long term instead preferring instead to develop larger municipalities which would have allowed more people living close together without having to leave their homes each day for work or shopping centers). On July 3rd 1984 - almost 60 years after incorporation - Ottumwah's only store closed its doors for good citing financial problems along with stricter zoning laws which limit businesses size & density on rural streetscape ! And all those hopes once again disappeared into thin air until last year when developer purchased property next door & started fresh planning process 🙂
