In 1854, Oskaloosa was founded by Capt. George H. Clements and his wife, Sarah J. Clements. The town was named for the Osage Nation, which ruled the area at the time. In 1881, Oskaloosa became a city and in 1907 it merged with Iowa City to form Des Moines metropolitan area. During World War II, the town played an important role as a munitions plant due to its close proximity to Des Moines and its large population of military personnel. In 1951, Oskaloosa lost its status as a city when it seceded from Des Moines and became an independent municipality again under the name of Oskaloosa-Montgomery Township. Since then, many aspects of life in Oskaloosa have changed: The population has grown considerably; however, there is still much that makes this small community unique such as its wide variety of cultural attractions including art galleries and theaters; nightlife; and excellent shopping opportunities. Additionally,Oskaloosa is home to several colleges and universities within walking distance including Drake University (just across the street), Iowa State University- Ames Campus (just east of town), Northern Illinois University Carbondale (northwest of town), Stroudsburg Area Community College (southwest of town) and even UIUC’s famous Wallace Hall! In early 2018, Amazon announced plans to build a new headquarters called "HQ2" near Oskaloosa; it is expected that the city will be among the top recipient cities for this project. The town's economy revolves around agriculture and natural resources such as coal and oil shale extraction; however, recent expansions have included technology startups as well as retail stores serving local farmers markets

In 1872, the railroad arrived to end passenger travel on the Cedar Rapids-Ottumwa road; instead it became a stagecoach line connecting Ottumwa with Burlington, Iowa; Oskaloosa became primarily a agricultural community with sheepraising being its mainstay industry until well into the 20th century. In 1916 both local newspapers merged to form The Dubuque Gazette (). After World War II there were declines in agriculture due to advancements in technology; however, some businesses such as BASF still continue operations today including processing food products for supermarkets. The current incarnation of Oskaloosa began developing after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29th 2005 which caused extensive damage to homes and businesses within the hurricane’s path including those located close to Lake Pontchartrain as well as storm surge damage affecting parts of Gulfport and Biloxi Mississippi reaching inland through Illinois into Wisconsin where it impacted Omaha Nebraska causing significant flooding all while destroying or damaged over $180 million worth of property throughout coastal Louisiana making this one of worst natural disasters ever seen across America with over 324 fatalities resulting making Katrina oneoftheworst US Disasters(accordingto FEMA). As result since Katrina Occidental Petroleum has announced plans to build an oil refinery next door their largest single investment outside Texas ever creating more than 2k jobs directly related thereto this will likely mean even more joblessness among locals long term prospects if/when Occidental decides against building because they would have left all their other properties sit idle meanwhile hundreds of people have lost their homes whether permanent or not especially considering many are homeless now without any hope for future assistance so much so some are actually flakesitting around trying not to give up hope only when someone offers them money does they take it because often times governments do not provide anything beyond what is offered already which most definitely leaves communities highly vulnerable now more so then ever before given both federal infrastructure failings as well as state government apathy

Today, Oskaloosa is a small community with a population of around 100 people.
