Oskaloosa is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines–Iowa City, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oskaloosa is located on the east bank of the Kinnickinnic River and it straddles the border of Polk County to the south and Johnson County to the north. The history of Oskaloosa begins with three families who arrived in 1854 from what is now Russia: Nicholas Fyodorovich Sokolov, his wife Natalia Petrovna Sokolova-Fyodorovna and their five children Ivan (1855-1937), Olga (1857-1940), Dmitry (1859-1945), Maria (baptized 1860 December 20) and Alexei Nikolaevich Sokolov (1862-1945). They first settled down on a small farm west of town now known as East Side Drive. On October 11, 1864, they married Anna Khokhlova who had come over with them from Russia when she was just eighteen years old. She later became an important figure in Oskaloosa's history as well as its political landscape because she helped organize local elections for state legislators during her lifetime and also served two terms on the city council. In 1883, Russian immigrant Mikhail Karpatkin bought farmland northeast of town from John Matson and began construction on a sawmill which would eventually become one of Iowa's largest employers. With this new industry came increased trade with Chicago and other parts of Wisconsin; however, Karpatkin quickly realized that he needed more land so he sold his property to Hennepin Company in 1886 for $10 per acre ($ Today it is about $130 per acre). The mill continued operations until 1913 when it burned down due to arson. In 1905 Karpatkin donated his land once again to the city for use as parkland which still includes today’s Karpatkin Park including a botanical garden built in 1909 by Drury & Sons Nurseries Incorporated; while also adding several miles of streetscape between downtown Oskaloosa and east side drive where today’s Town Hall Corner stands. In 1907 Samuel Morse moved into town from Northfield after purchasing some land adjacent to what became Morse Park in 1906 along with his brother Alfred Vail Jr., who would later be mayorof Omaha, Nebraska In 1915 Nikolai Krylov set up shop inside what is now First National Bank building before moving out into his own store across Main Street in 1917 In 1920 Czechoslovakian immigrantsLadislav Pospisilik started working at JBS Hardware Store next door before leaving for good two years later . That same year Harry Wachtel opened up Wachtel's General Store across Route 6 from downtown on Center Street near present day State Fairgrounds . Two years later Carl Niehaus took over Niehaus' store at Sixth Street corner then across Second Avenue after Niehaus died suddenly young age 33 . Finally Fred Meyer reopened Wachtel's General Store at Fourth Street corner soon thereafter followed by Sam'll Magness opening up his grocery store opposite Third Street Market Place soon thereafter which would continue throughtout most all these changes until being pulled down numerous times during Prohibition eradue primarily to fire hazard however also due to zoning codes changing frequently contributeing extensively too many businesses within a single geographic area caused basically endless traffic jamming throughout entire center square weekend
