Oskaloosa is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. Oskaloosa has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated Cfa on the Köppen Climate Classification system. The town site was laid out by the Sac and Fox Indians in 1827 as part of their Indian Removal Act programme. The first settler to arrive was John Fritchey in 1829 and he named his new town after General James Wilkinson's headquarters on the Missouri River near St Louis, Missouri. In 1840, Isaac Phelps moved from Illinois to start what would become one of America's largest cattle drives - this time through central Iowa - transporting over 1 million head of livestock across North America. In 1851, Phelps organized the First National Bank in Oskaloosa with $10,000 capital raised from local investors. The bank became one of America's most successful banks and eventually merged with J P Morgan in 1968. The first school in Oskaloosa was built in 1836 by Methodist missionaries under instruction from Reverend Drury Lewisohn of nearby Cedar Rapids who also served as superintendent for Indian schools within Johnson County. Reverend Lewisohn also founded Cedar Rapids Female Academy which later became Millsaps College and remains an accredited institution today In 1861 Abraham Lincoln addressed a rally at Oskaloosa High School that helped spur interest in politics among local students and led to Lincoln becoming an occasional resident of the city during his presidential campaigns . In 1865 Union troops burned down two stores and homes located adjacent to Central Avenue (now Main Street) while attacking Confederate forces retreating through Sioux City following a three-day engagement at Mission Road Bridge northeast of town . For many years no arrests were made related to this event – until now! After more than 50 years since these tragic events took place, it has been determined that four soldiers involved were tried but all found not guilty by reason of military necessity before being discharged . On July 4th 1915 (the 100th anniversary year marks), Memorial Day weekend, a fire destroyed several businesses along Main Street including The Gilded Cage theatre where President Woodrow Wilson delivered his famous “ Four Freedoms speech” ..... This significant incident provides another reminder that communities like Oskaloosa must continue to work together when faced with adversity or common misunderstandings
