Oskaloosa is a small town in the U.S. state of Iowa, located on the banks of the Des Moines River. The population was 653 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1868 by George Washington Carver, who named it after his home city, Odessa, Texas. The first settler in Oskaloosa was John Pemberton in 1851. He and his wife, Margaret, founded a cabin on the east side of the forks of Cedar and Hawk Rivers. On December 15, 1854, Oskaloosa had its first school superintendent: Dr. James Hogg from Council Bluffs, IA. The post office called Oskaloosa "Hogan's Store" until it changed its name to "Oskaloosa" on July 10, 1893. In 1902 Jens Hansen opened up his grocery store in town which soon became a popular stopping point for people travelling down the Cedar River valley on their way to West Des Moines or Indianola. In 1916 local rancher Clem Sorenson donated land near West Side Drive to build what would become Union Pacific Railroad's main depot and freight yards; today this landmark still stands as part of downtown Oskaloosa. During World War II many residents volunteered with the military and served in various positions including minesweepers off the coast of Maine; they are also known for their involvement in President Truman's "Volunteer Project" which aimed to get citizens interested in helping out by doing small tasks such as painting roofs or driving heavy equipment around campuses across America during summertime (the project was cancelled due to lack funding).
