Oskaloosa is a town in and the county seat of Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Waukee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oskaloosa was founded in 1853 by George Washington Smith and others on land that formerly belonged to Captain John Hettinger. The first post office in Oskaloosa was established in 1854. In 1863, it became the center of a new township which included present-day Oskaloosa and parts of neighboring townships. The first courthouse in Oskaloosa was built in 1870. A train stop on US 1 near present day Main Street served as the town's primary transportation hub until 1895 when a depot was built south of town at what is now State Fair Park. In 1902, Oskaloosa voters passed a $5 million bond issue to build a new high school, which opened in 1903. The original building still stands and serves as the town's only museum today. That same year, also at this time, construction began on what would become known as "The Mall" – an indoor/outdoor shopping mall that would anchor downtown since its opening in 1955. Today, The Mall continues to be one of the most popular destinations for shoppers in Polk County and across Iowa City metropolitan area! On July 6th, 2007 (the date that Walmart announced they were moving their headquarters from Bentonville Arkansas to Plano Texas), local residents gathered around their fireplaces to celebrate their community's newest addition – Walmart Supercenter! This event marked not only Walmart's largest presence ever within Polk County but also signaled an important shift for downtown development with plans for more retail space being initiated soon thereafter! Oskaloosa, Iowa has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The town was founded in 1836 by Captain Isaac Bradley and his wife, Rebecca. Oskaloosa became a community of about 100 people and rapidly grew thanks to its location on the Mississippi River. The town prospered until 1857, when a severe flood destroyed most of the town and killed many of its citizens. In 1865, Oskaloosa was renamed Vicksburg after General Ulysses S. Grant's victory over Confederate forces at Vicksburg. Oskaloosa slowly recovered from its post-Vicksburg tragedy until the late 1800s, when it experienced another significant growth period due to its strategic location on the Missouri River. In 1907, Oskaloosa became part of the newly created city of Des Moines and soon began experiencing rapid growth as one of Iowa's largest cities. In 1938, Des Moines annexed neighboring communities of West Des Moines and East Des Moines into their city limits; this move greatly increased Oskaloosa's population size while also increasing economic opportunities for residents. In 1955, Oskaloosa merged with neighboring Ames to form what is now known as "The City of Ames". During this time period, Oskaloosaa experienced tremendous growth due to new housing developments and commercial activity that occurred in downtown Ames. Oskaloosa continued growing through the years until 1990 when it lost much of its prominence as a result of changes in local government structure within Iowa City – which had become more populous than any city within Iowa City’s boundaries – and other suburban expansion within Central Iowa resulting in an overall decrease in population sizes throughout central Iowa since then (although some smaller communities located around Ames have seen recent increases). However, during recent decades there has been renewed interest in revitalizing large portions of downtown Oskaloosa including expanding Blockbuster Video store operations along Second Street (just east thereof), creating new restaurants/cafeterias inside or adjacent to existing businesses along Second Street (eastern edge thereof), redeveloping several vacant properties adjoining First Avenue southward from Main Street into mixed-use development dubbed Fourth WardWalkerville Township Center District II redevelopment Project - which includes constructing two full blocks northward from Main Street onto Fourth WardWalkerville Township Center Boulevard - among other projects currently underway or planned within or near downtown center district demographics that are intended stimulate downtown area resurgence; however these efforts have not yet generated comprehensive results such as attracting high-end retail tenants or achieving significant popular demand for such types redevelopment instead leading generally only modest successes thus far despite numerous public investment dollars expended therein)
