As farming became more established in eastern Iowa following this period of growth, so too did trade between Des Moines and Indianola along I-35W which connected Ozark Plateau with Prairie du Chien County west of Sioux City (then spelled Ottawa). By 1850, there were several large cotton plantations near present day West Burlington (Davenport) while one man had started a flour mill on the east side of town by 1862.
