Oskaloosa is a city in Des Moines County, Iowa, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Oskaloosa is located on the edge of the Dubuque metropolitan area and is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines–Centralia, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located just east of Interstate 80 and south of I-20. The first permanent settler in what would become Oskaloosa was John Dearborn in 1855. Dearborn built a cabin on a hill overlooking what would later be called Main Street. A post office and school were erected here in 1857, and by 1860 there were ten residents living hereabouts. The town plat was filed in 1865, but it didn't take off until 1870 when three men - George Vaught, Abraham French and Solomon Curtis - donated land to form what would become Main Street. In 1882 an Improvement Association was formed to help promote development within the limits of Oskaloosa Township; this association became known as "The Town". In 1905 an addition to the township was added; this addition became known as East Side Avenue. In 1916 Oskaloosa had a population of 161 residents; by 1924 that number had increased to 281 due to migration from neighboring townships into Oskaloosa Township during that year's farm depression (the Great Depression). Today, with its sprawling lawns and wide streetscape, Oskaloosa offers plenty for visitors who want something more than just suburbia – it’s like being inside one of history’s great old cities! Oskaloosa, Iowa is a small town in Rice County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oskaloosa's history dates back to 1854 when it was called "Savage." The town grew rapidly during the post-Civil War era and by 1880 had reached its current size. Oskaloosa began as an agricultural community with homes built around a central square. By 1915, there were over 100 businesses in the town and it boasted a library, church and general store. In 1922, Oskaloosa became an incorporated village under the name of Sioux City and has continued to grow since then with annexations from other towns in Rice County. The most common industry in Oskaloosa today is agriculture although some residents also work in nearby Ames or West Des Moines. There are several schools in Oskaloosa including Prairie View A&M University which offers Agricultural Sciences & Veterinary Medicine degrees; Indianola Community College which offers liberal arts & professional programs; and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary which offers theological studies for ministers across denominations.
Oskaloosa, Iowa is a city in and the county seat of Oskaloosa County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,951 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Iowa. The first settler in what is now Oskaloosa County was Levi Price on November 6, 1855. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Des Moines River. The first post office in Oskaloosa County was established in 1857, and it was called "Plymouth". A mill built by Wm. Fenton located near present day Ames became known as "the best flour mill west of the Mississippi" due to its high quality flour products. In 1868, territorial farmers formed a provisional government under leaders such as John Fetterman and George Stephenson to manage their own affairs within Indian Territory boundaries which included present day Oskaloosa County. A store and hotel were soon established in town and began to fill up with settlers from all over Iowa who were looking for new land to farm. In 1870, Jno Burch bought land east of present day Ames from John Eckhardt for $2 per acre which he eventually developed into what is today downtown Ames withstood the destructive floods of 1907 that destroyed much of north central Iowa City and most other eastern towns including Ames. With railroad construction beginning along the Illinois Central Railroad right through town during the late 1800s (especially after railroads reachedIowa City), oats production increased dramatically leading to an increase in jobs opportunities for local people while providing transportation benefits for farmers throughout centralIowa counties bordering Illinois; this led to newly founded businesses clustered around rail yards throughout town becoming known as "the railway capital of America." The boomtown atmosphere that characterized early 20th centuryIA had ended long before World War I when many residents left for better opportunity elsewhere; however, nearby Red Cedar State Park remains one of largest remaining open air recreation areas remaining wholly within urban limits anywhere across North America despite recent efforts by developers to redevelop/destroy parts or all of it including park amenities which have resulted in lawsuits between citizens & developers alike; this has made Red Cedar one popular tourist destination among locals & visitors alike both during & since prohibition ended 50 years ago today!
