The first permanent settler in what is now Oskaloosa was Levi Wessels in 1836. Ladd built a log cabin on his property and named it "Ladd's Grove." He also purchased two other parcels of land around it for $2 each. Many soldiers' families never returned home their loved ones some returning only after their countries Defeat but many never did see their homes again also families continued moving out into surrounding counties until they finally all left Iowa following prohibition

Oskaloosa, Iowa is a small town in Dixon County, Iowa, United States. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. Oskaloosa is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1875 by John Sibley and his family. It was named for the small village of Oskaloosa in Turkey where they were born. John's father had come to America from Russia and married Anna Smith in 1853. In 1875, John's brother James took over management of the settlement and renamed it Oskaloosa after his home country. By 1890, there were only 55 residents living in Oskaloosa Village and it had dwindled to just six people by 1900. In 1902, local farmer James Foust donated land to build a school on which students would learn farming skills while also having access to education outside of their village during the summer months. The first school building was built on what is now Main Street and served as both a primary/elementary school as well as a garage/shop until 1955 when it became an annex to nearby Indianola Elementary School. In 1946, due to World War II shortages of Building Materials, Oskaloosa Village voted to become self-sufficient with its own post office and government services through the creation of the first public housing development in Iowa (the "Eagle House"). With that project came new challenges such as water main installation and other infrastructure improvements required for self-reliance; these projects continue today through monthly volunteer work done by citizens who call themselves "The EAGLE Team". Since becoming self-sufficient, much has changed about Oskaloosa: A new high school opened in 1997 that replaced Eagle House; businesses have sprung up around town including two restaurants (one closed); more than 50 volunteers help maintain various aspects of community life; several arts programs are offered throughout the year;; numerous civic events are held annually;; numerous special events have been scheduled or announced for this year alone includingIowa State Fairgrounds Jazz Festival,,Festival on 3 Mile Creek.,DayTONA Poker Classic etc... Many things still remain unchanged however - there is alwaysorgethe feeling you are right at home when walking into town!
