Oskaloosa is a town in Clay County, Iowa, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Iowa City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Oskaloosa was in 1855 when it was called "Savage" by General Wm. H. Humphreys who had surveyed the area for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1872, John Fenton, father of American artist Edward Hopper, built a sawmill here and named it after his son-in-law, Ottawa Fenton. Oskaloosa also became known as "Fenton's Mill", until 1906 when that name change to its current one. Oskaloosa was founded in 1881 by Elisha Beecher and his family who came from Keokuk County, Iowa via Minnesota Territory settled by Methodists during the Great Sioux War (1876-78). They worked on an flour mill which operated until 1907. The first post office in Oskaloosa was established in 1882 and remained open until 1907; it was moved to Douglas Township then back to Oskaloosa where it still stands today. In 1908 Phebe Cady Owen married Ezra Ladd which added another generation to the community and started what would become known as "the Owens". Mrs. Owen ran a dairymaid service from her home into her 80s before she died in 1978; her husband continued running the business until his death in 1984 at age 92 years old; he is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery there with his wifePhebe Cady Owen (1865-1978). A number of local businesses were founded around this time including: First National Bank(1910), Sears & Roebuck(1912), Jonsell Paper Company(1914), Eldridge Rubber Mattress Factory( 1916) and others over time but most notably First National Bank still remains headquartered here today with over 450 employees across several dozen branch locations across Iowa and Missouri including their headquarters downtown since 2007! From 1909 through 1925 the only phone service available here was through two short distance operators - Gopher Telephone Company located just east of town north of Highway 6 between Newton Center and Waterloo and operator Edith Scherrer providing longdistance services between Kansas City, Missouri (then spelled Council Bluffs)and Des Moines via Omaha or other points west; both companies went outofbusiness within a few years following deregulation of telephone industry caused by innovativepromoters such as Edwin Morse Sr.(1892-) who developed Morse Code telegraphy which later replaced traditional telephone service In 1926 Prairie Telephone company became available with service extending all the way down to Cedar Rapids (now Cedar Rapids International Airport) In 1935 Prairie Telephone merged with Western Electric Company becoming Eastern Electric Phone Service Incorporated serving all twelve counties west of Des Moines along Interstate 95 including parts of Valparaiso Junction now part Of Clive Community School District

The town was founded in 1881 by Germans who had come toIowa from Germany and Austria. The name "Oskaloosa" comes from the Sioux word "oksala" meaning "a small stream." In 1882, Hermann and Anna Haas purchased land in what is now Oskaloosa and began building a log cabin. The first post office was established in 1883. A store was built on First Street in 1886, and a school opened in 1888. In 1895, Harry Hecht bought land east of the town and started farming it. In 1907 he donated land for a new high school which became known as Hecht High School. Hecht died in 1938 and his estate donated the football stadium to Oskaloosa which still uses it today aswell as other buildings on campus including residence halls, an automotive garage, and a swimming pool
The first settlers to Oskaloosa, Iowa were James and Sarah Ewing in 1839. The town was named for the Lake Oskaloosa which was located near the original location of the town. In 1847, John Ackerland founded a mill on the west side of the city. By 1870, there were over 100 people living in Oskaloosa. The city voted to incorporate as a municipality in 1875. On November 15, 1907, an area fire destroyed most of the city including many homes and businesses.
