The history of gun sights in Oskaloosa, Iowa begins with the first rifles being made there in the early 1800s. The area was rich in natural resources and much of this was used to create gun sights. In 1875, a man named George Hennepin bought land near Oskaloosa and started building a mill called Hennepin & Company. This mill produced flour for most of Iowa until it burned down in 1909. One reason why this mill didn’t produce as much flour as expected was because gun sights had not yet been invented! It wasn’t until 1911 that someone breakthrough with creating what is now known as a modern rifle sight!
