Oskaloosa,Iowa is a town in Iowa County, located in the eastern portion of the state. The population was 2,002 at the 2010 census. Oskaloosa is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area and is one of the five municipalities in Polk County. The name "Oskaloosa" is derived from Osage Sioux word "oskawa", meaning "a place where there are many buffalo." The first permanent settler in what now Oskaloosa was James Naylor who arrived around 1837. The town was platted on February 14, 1846 by order of Commissioners John A. Beard and George Prentice. The first post office opened in Oskaloosa on March 8, 1846 under the name Rangeley. In 1865, David Ladd bought 95 acres (30 hectares) of land east of present-day Oskaloosa and built a log cabin called Prairie du Chien which served as both a stop for stage coaches travelling between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids and as a hotel until 1898 when it burned down. In 1901, railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt donated 54 acres (21 hectares) to create what would become Polk County; this donation made Oskaloosa an official county seat with its current location on November 3rd, 1902 It wasn't until 1907 that churches began being built in addition to residences; these included First Baptist Church which replaced Prairie du Chien as the town's first building and Methodist Episcopal Zion Church which was built adjacent to First Baptist Church . On October 6th 1907 local citizens raised $2,500 towards construction of a new high school; this school would finally be completed in 1912 after years of construction costs totaling $3500 . One major event that took place during the late 1800s within short distance of downtown Oskaloosa were several horse races typically staged at Logansport Race Course which continued until 1949 when they were moved to nearby Arlington Park Speedway . These events helped promote farming communities throughout northeast Iowa while also generating some revenue for small businesses . Additionally during this time period numerous fairs were held throughout northeast Iowa including State Fairgrounds along with carnivals such as Model Railroad Days performances at various amusement parks across Northeast Iowa

Oskaloosa, Iowa is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,744 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. Oskaloosa was founded in 1851 by Reverend J.D. Green and his wife Anna Deane Green. In 1892 it became a city and was renamed Oskaloosa after the Osage Indian nation which inhabited central Iowa during the 1830s-1840s. The first white settler in Oskaloosa was Wm Henson in 1853, who built a cabin on the east side of town near where I-35 now intersects US Highway 6A. The first store opened in 1858 and post office began operation on November 15th of that year under the name of "Odessa". In 1889, Mayor James Condon donated land to build what would become City Hall and Park Place on Main Street between Market and First Streets NW. This project cost $5,000 and took five years to complete; it included plans for a public library, water system, streetcar system and several other features that are still present today including City Hall Square (the original site of City Hall) as well as parkland across from it on Third Street NW which includes Davenport University's John Marshall School complex (now home to Emerson College). The new city hall also served as the county courthouse until 1925 when that building was replaced by an addition to City Hall Square which also served as county jail from 1886 until 1951 when it burned down along with most of downtown Oskaloosa due to an arson attack by two teenagersaged 11-14 years old. The only resident continuously living within city limits since its founding has been John Doudreau since 1955; he died on October 3rd of that year at age 97 years old following many years spent living outside of town Limits while caring for his mother who had dementia until her death in 1998.
