In 1872, Ottumwa was renamed Oskaloosa after General James K. Polk and his wife Ella Wheeler Woodson were visiting the area during their presidential campaign. ottumwa means "place where there are trees" in Sioux language and refers to an ancient Indian village that stood near present-day Ottumwa on Big Sioux Creek. Although founded as a rural community, Oskaloosa soon became known for its manufacturing capabilities and has been credited with starting the first paper mill in America in 1889. The town also developed an agricultural sector which produces fruits and vegetables, hay, eggs and other livestock products, as well as lumber for buildings and furniture.
