Oskaloosa is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. Oskaloosa is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The two most important industries in Oskaloosa are agriculture and manufacturing. The first people to live in what is now Oskaloosa arrived during the early 1800s when wagon trains started traveling through the region. There were several small villages dotting what is now Polk County before Oskaloosa was founded in 1868 as a result of land speculation by John Hickey. A post office called Ottumwa was established at the junction of US Highway 20 and Indian Road in 1869, but it failed to take off because few people wanted to go there. In 1871, Jnoeph Hickey bought some additional land and founded Oskaloosa with his brother-in-law Amos Purdy as its first Mayor. After years of growth, the town incorporated on November 3, 1916 following a vote by residents. In 1935, local cotton farmer Floyd Norris donated 4 acres (1 hectare) of his farmstead near present day Main Street to be used as a high school football field for use by neighboring rural high schools; that year's inaugural game was played on October 15th between Hendrickson High School and Waukee Catholic High School (now Waukee Union High School). When World War II began and agricultural production plummeted due tothe war effort, many farmers turned their properties into military barracks for troops being sent home from war zones across America; however, no school buildings were ever erected on Norris' property because he refused to sell them or allow development on his land without compensation. In 1948–49 efforts commenced by then-Mayor Tom Larkin (D) to bring more New Agey businesses such as health food stores and auto parts stores into town via an agreement with Midwestern Interstate Commerce Commission – which also helped attract automotive manufacturer Dodge & Plymouth Motorsports Incorporated – resulting in over $2 million worth of business brought new life into downtown Oskaloosa over a three-year period starting in 1951 which saw an increase in retail sales from 30% to 50%. However during this time period not one automobile manufactured within 500 miles (800 kilometers) of Osgoode Falls had been produced within Iowa; accordingly much store space was developed around Main Street instead which continues today as OneIDA Plaza shopping center which includes four anchors including Sears Holdings Corporation - parent company Sears - Auto Parts Super Store - Kmart - and JCPenney Co., Inc.. Additionally other major employers during this time include Loveland Sanitarium & Hospitals Inc., Social Security Administration Building & Suite 205 West Fourth Street since 1951 until its demolition in 1984; First National Bank Building since 1955 until it closed down too late for renovation/ Renovation Work begun later that year inside building along with additions including seven story addition(s) totaling 248 feet (.76 meters), added height above ground level below street level permit allowed under original zoning plan . By 1970 about eighty percent all produce grown within one mile radius west of Shopkoosta had gone out onto the market; consequently only five percent remained local production self sufficient During this time frame too numerous attempts were made unsuccessfully at getting state support for infrastructure improvements such as road expansion/widening capabilities necessary for increased trade/commerce coming through downtown while also utilizing available funds raised through various taxes levied against heavy industry located eastward along I-80 corridor particularly those tax breaks given earmarked specifically towards Osgoode Falls industrial sector Streamlined transportation methods came about after Douglas Aircraft Company purchased General Electric Aircraft Division's Wichita facility adjacent to I-80 just south of Scranton Forge Boulevard on December 5th 1976 for an undisclosed amount making Wichita brothers Dennis & Bob McDonnell's hometown job offer finally concrete followed by workforce relocation plans announced September 1978 bringing nearly 2200 employees directly impacting negatively upon communityMuch has changed since then with general aviation becoming primarily FocusCorp Airport providing commercial operations locally while maintaining brush side access thereto providing excellent flyover views Propulsion systems utilized today include turbofan enginesmanufacturing stopped altogether here six months prior retirement announcement followed continuing trend typical operated until recently Retired couple operates restaurant currently open based upon restored condition originally built back then
The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Oskaloosa County were French explorers in the early 1800s. They named the area "Oskaloosa" after an ancient Native American chief, which is also the name of a town in Iowa. The first settlers arrived in 1847, and by 1860, there were over 150 people living in the area. The population exploded during the Civil War, when many farmers came from Illinois to fight for the Confederacy. The population decreased rapidly following the war, but grew again during Reconstruction. By 1920, there were only 10 people living in Oskaloosa County.
