By 1865, it had grown to 50 people and had its own post office. The town's first school opened in 1868. By 1920, there were 100 people living in Oskaloosa. At that time, the economy of Oskaloosa depended on agriculture and manufacturing. However, these industries declined during the late 20th century due to changes in global trade patterns and technologies. Today, Oskaloosa is a small community with a limited amount of economic activity outside of tourism.

In 1931, Oskaloosa became part of the new Des Moines metropolitan area and lost its status as a village. In 1957, Ottumwa won an award from the United States Department of Agriculture for being one of the "most improved" towns within their criteria for designation as an "agricultural community." On July 1, 1961, Ottumwa became part of the new city of Des Moines proper when that city was formed from portions of five other towns: Burlington (1892), Cedar Rapids (1911), Davenport (1927), Galesburg (1929), and Marion (1931).
