The lumber industry played an important role during early 20th century Oskaloosa with mills making plywood, sawn lumber and shingles from local tree stands. A sawmill also processed logs into boards which were then sold as flooring or firewood inside or outside homes. Today there are only two remaining active mills - one owned by Pella Paper Products and another by US Steel Corporation - both closed down more than 25 years ago but their products still remain evident on local streetsides throughout downtown Oskaloosa today! Today's economy primarily relies on agriculture with corn production accounting for most of the jobs available through businesses in town today; however, some manufacturing remains – such as men’s clothing manufacturer Belknap & Company – which has been located here since 1905 according to town records!
Oskaloosa was founded in 1854 by the Rasmusons. The Rasmusons were a Norwegian family who immigrated to Iowa in 1853. In 1854, Ole Kirk Christiansen and his brother-in-law, John Davenport, bought land on the south side of the Des Moines River for $2 per acre. They named their farm Oskaloosa after the Ostrova salt mine on the Russian side of the border. By 1865, Oskaloosa had a population of 10 people.
